Avondale College

The redevelopment of one of NZ’s largest schools started with a clear conceptual framework for the masterplan as a linking street space to unify and connect the campus into a cohesive collegial environment. The Kuaka (Godwits) that traverse the site to feed across the changing tides of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours provided a story of migration that the school connected with and inspired the design of the canopies and landscape “Where pathways cross knowledge is shared and friendships are made”. Over 90 Teaching spaces were redeveloped over a four year, three stage redevelopment with minimal temporary works and disruption to the students. Avondale set a bench mark for efficiency sustainability and future proof design.

“The team responsible for the build have been very mindful of their responsibilities in creating the very best possible learning environment for the Avondale community: One that respects the past yet creates a forward thinking, energy efficient, high quality design that is attractive, robust and sufficiently flexible to be able to be adapted for the changing educational demands of the future.” Brent Lewis - School Principal.

Justin delivered Avondale as design and project lead architect with Jasmax and received a NZIA National Award, and a NZCA concrete award for sustainability.
